PHSE "Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got up again." Nelson Mandela
At Statham, we strive to provide a structured programme of personal development to nurture the ‘whole child’ and increase learning capacity, underpinned by mindfulness philosophy and practice. We want our children to develop their skills in order to become resilient, respectful and confident members of society in the future. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our catchment area currently does not have a huge amount of diversity shown within it and our children can be heavily influenced by the media and parental views so we have a duty to balance that by providing children with as many opportunities as possible to see equality within our lessons. We learn about other cultures, families, religions, current affairs and trending issues so that our children have the knowledge to challenge stereotypical views. We also spend a lot of time supporting our children to develop their social skills in order to effectively resolve conflicts and self-regulation techniques to manage their emotions in order to promote good mental health and self-care.
Through our PSHE curriculum we encourage our children to think and empower one another to be good citizens of the future. This is also emphasised through our class collective worship and reflection sessions. We use schemes called Jigsaw, My Happy Mind, No Outsiders and Amazing People Schools as tools to support teaching and learning.
Our aim is to:
promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our children at school and in society
teach resilience, and build character and good mental health strategies to prepare our children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life
promote healthy, respectful relationships focussing on family and friendships in all contexts including online
develop personal attributes such as kindness, integrity, generosity and honesty
We encourage our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community. In doing so we help develop their sense of self-worth. We teach them how society is organised and governed. We also cover economic well being, careers and enterprise education, as well as education for personal safety, including assessing and managing risk. We ensure that they experience the process of democracy in school through the school council. We teach them about rights, respect and responsibilities. They learn to appreciate what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society.
PSHE is taught every week through a scheme called ‘Jigsaw’’. Jigsaw is split into 6 core themes – Being in my World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships, Changing Me. PSHE is also embedded through every subject, through assemblies and class reflection time.
Positive Mental Wellbeing
We use a scheme called My Happy Mind to support children in positive mental wellbeing. My Happy Mind is a mental health and well-being programme that supports children in their learning habits to support their own mental health. It helps children understand how their brains work and creates a culture that helps to build children's resilience, confidence and self-esteem. My Happy Mind also teaches the children how to self regulate and manage their emotions in stressful times.
It is split into 5 modules that run throughout the whole school - Meet Your Brain, Celebrate, Appreciate, Relate and Engage. Children have short weekly sessions that cover all aspects of positive mental wellbeing as well as educating children in the role their brain has in decision making. and children have journals to record and revisit aspects of learning.
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
At Statham, we believe that Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) is an integral part of a child’s education. RSE is about understanding the importance of family life, stable and loving relationships and respect for others, love and care. Providing children with this understanding is vital to help them develop positive relationships both in and out of school. Educating children about their bodies empowers them to understand the changes their body goes through as they grow and gives them confidence to be able to talk about their bodies.
RSE is taught in all year groups in a progressive way. Whilst our science curriculum looks at the scientific process of reproduction of humans, plants and animals, we also explore the changes that happen to our bodies as we grow older, the types of relationships we have and how to deal with them in RSE lessons. The Jigsaw scheme also covers RSE and is fully compliant with the DfE Statutory Relationships & Health Education Guidance. The scheme also encourages children to develop the skills of listening, empathy, talking about feelings and relationships with families and friends.
The RSE programme is delivered during the academic year and we communicate with parents beforehand to fully inform how the scheme will be delivered.
Relationships and Sex Education Overviews for each class.
